The looks of Theory Fall/Winter 2014 show that the most simple and understated silhouettes could make the greatest impact this fall. Designer Oliver Theyskens played a lot with contrast in this collection, mixing hard and soft elements to create looks that appeared relaxed and effortless, but still sophisticated and put together. High Fashion, College Wallet: Maison Martin Margiela

French fashion house Maison Martin Margiela has been innovating since 1988. Designer Martin Margiela originally hails from Belgium and graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp), which also trained other renowned designers including Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, and Kris Van Assche.  Many of these designers, Margiela especially, became known for their avant-garde approaches to fashion during the 1980s. High Fashion College Wallet: Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2014

The Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2014 at New York Fashion Week presented a remix of the mid-sixties pop movement in London. The line showcased capes, tweedy coats, lapel blazers, tartan skirts and school girl pleated minis paired with Mary Janes or knee high boots. Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane drew inspiration from artist John Baldessari’s appropriation in art to create a parallel between art and youth culture. While these looks are ready-to-wear, the cost is not as attainable; however, similar looks can be found in places not as detrimental to the college budget. High Fashion, College Wallet: Raf Simons

Belgian menswear designer Raf Simons often uses bold graphics in bright colors for his collections, making them hard to emulate. His Spring/Summer 2014 collection followed suit, showcasing a multitude of stripes and layered tops in various colors. A particular look from the runway show features an oversized striped shirt paired with slim-fit black pants and sneakers in a matching color palette. The shirt is the centerpiece of the outfit and unfortunately, thanks to Simons’ signature designs, nearly impossible to match.
