Finding Style in Synthetic Wigs

Alessandro Michele has designed oversized glittered sunglasses; Raf Simons made cowboy boots, and designers have been fueling excitement back into fashion — now with colorful synthetic wigs.

These borderline ridiculous colored bobs are no longer reserved for Halloween. Vibrant wigs are a growing trend among the fashion-forward and are now being seen everywhere, from the streets of major cities to the catwalk of fashion week shows.

Although he was not the creator of this trend, Jeremy Scott filled his Fall/Winter 2018 show with wigs. Scott placed major models such as Gigi Hadid, Jourdan Dunn and Slick Woods donning neon blue, pink and purple wigs. The wigs were color-coordinated with the outfits, giving the vibe of a children’s cartoon in which each character had a specific color scheme.

The trend has began its popularity among celebrities and the social media influencers. Nicki Minaj jump-started her career and potentially the wig trend by wearing outrageous wigs of every color. She’s worn trendy neon bobs as well as an iconic waist-length platinum wig in the “Beez in the Trap” video, Minaj’s career capitalized on the outlandishness of her hairstyle choices. Before the contemporaries, one of the most notable colorful wig connoisseurs was rapper Lil’ Kim. Kim is still a popular Halloween inspiration from her “Crush On You” music video from 1996, in which the rapper sported four vibrant colored wigs. Beauty influencers such as Courtney Trop (@AlwaysJudging) have pioneered the wig trend by wearing them to fashion week events and festivals like Art Basel.

Colorful wigs are definitely a weekend trend that’s most suitable for a fun night out with friends or an accent piece for a festival or party. Although it is a great break from the monotony that usually covers the rest of the calendar, this trend is not great for those working nine-to-five jobs. If you dare to be on the edge of trends and to switch up your look this Friday night, be sure to check out Halloween Adventure on Fourth Avenue and Wigs and Plus on 14th Street.
