High Fashion, College Wallet: Rosie Assoulin F/W 2017

In a flurry of fabric, flowers, and fierce patterns, Rosie Assoulin’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection filled the room with a series of outfits with varying degrees of wearability. The newcomer label that launched in 2013 did not disappoint with this minimalist avant-garde collection that says “great-grandma’s junk closet is back in style.”

The earth and jewel tones evoke a more natural and relaxed feel in this collection. While some pieces do not seem to correlate with each other, the polished and bohemian design strings them together for a Free People-meets-J.Crew vibe. Assoulin did include many trends that appeared in other F/W collections, such as lampshading, floral detailing and texture blending. However,Assoulin’s interpretation of this year’s fads dares to push the extreme in every facet while evoking a delicate beauty. The excessive silk and chiffon fabric drapes over the models without burying her, and the three-dimensional flowers that appear on the pieces create the illusion of a garden growing on the models.

Look 11 in the Ready-to-Wear collection highlights the advantages and stylistic benefits of embracing the comfy chic trend. The outfit features an off-white cable knit poncho over white linen pants fitted at the ankles. The unique black leather, half-inch pointed heels are reminiscent of casual slip-on loafers. To accessorize, the model holds a small gold and black floral handbag with black ribbon handles and a black ribbon pendant that matches her handbag.

If you’re interested in finding your own version of this Rosie Assoulin piece, start off with this cable knit poncho from Lands’ End for $60. The price tag might be on the higher end, but this will keep you warm all winter long without the caveat of couture designer prices. Add these $35 simple cropped pants from Macy’s for a relaxed feel under the oversized sweater. For your footwear, try these black tassel loafers from ASOS for $38. The suede adds texture and a darker ambiance to the look. Trade in the handbag for this $15 geometric print wristlet from Charming Charlie’s. The wristlet generates a sense of ease and convenience for the days on-the-go.

And to top things off, check out this long black ribbon necklace with an edgy rib cage pendant for $9 or this simplistic ribbon necklace with a cross pendant for just under $5. To personalize, use a pendant from one of your own necklaces and repurpose it by threading it through the black ribbon. Finish the ensemble with a dark berry lip, like this $6 matte lipstick from NYX in the color Siren.
