Stakes were high for the Fall 2017 Saint Laurent runway show. It was Anthony Vaccarello’s debut for the brand, as he recently took over as creative director after Hedi Slimane’s departure. Vaccarello closed his own line to focus on running Saint Laurent, with his goal being reimagining the brand’s aesthetic. He sees a future for the brand that has respect for shows past while breaking from the classic elements, having displayed this in the Paris show with an ‘80s inspired collection presented inside a former monastery. Leather, velvet, plunging necklines, gold lamé and asymmetrical pieces were all prevalent throughout the show.
Faretta, the fifth model to walk, wore a look that perfectly blended the edgy with the classic feminine. Her top was a black velvet long-sleeved bustier-inspired shirt with a plunging neckline. On the bottom, the model wore slouchy, light denim boyfriend jeans, adding a more casual, effortless air to complement the top’s fitted, eye-catching structure. Her shoes appeared to be normal skinny, pointed-toe heels, but when one looked closely they would see this black patent, ankle-strapped pair gets its support from Yves Saint Laurent’s initials. Accessories were minimal, kept to statement rhinestone ear cuffs. The model’s hair was free-flowing, and makeup was a minimal, natural look, keeping all attention on the clothing.
This look will provide a good weekend option, transitioning easily between day and night, and the right pieces can recreate it affordably. Start with a black, long-sleeved top, either a bustier or anything with a deep neckline. Some good options are this $22 basic, versatile shirt from ASOS or this $45 lace-sleeved Chicwish top, perfect for those who want a more femme version with a sweetheart neckline. The boyfriend jeans are a basic staple that many may already own or want to purchase in their preferred brand. Those looking to buy a new pair can try Urban Outfitters to get vintage denim with just the right amount of slouch for just $40.
The shoes certainly do not need to have a literal YSL heel, so look for any black, shiny, pointed-toe pair. These, $45 from Shoecup.com, are a simple but fitting option which would work well in various outfits to come. No two ear cuffs are exactly alike, so outside of looking for ones with rhinestones, this piece of the outfit is up to personal aesthetic. Forever 21 is always a good go-to for accessories — try a simple geometric piece for $5 or or embrace the beauty of nature with leaves for $7. Do not spend too much time on hair and makeup; go for a simple, minimalist look to highlight your best natural features.
This Saint Laurent look feels casual yet somewhat dressed-up and edgy, making it work amazingly for lunch with friends or date night. The simple but eye-catching pieces are definitely reusable, and their careful balance of comfort and revealing some skin produce a contagious confidence. For an affordable price, wearers are sure to look and feel amazing, leaving friends and others amazed at this effortless yet surefire look.
