Ocean waves tumbled in the background and the strong beat of Royal Deluxe’s “I’m Gonna Do My Thing” set the pace as the models of Cynthia Rowley’s Spring 2016 collection meandered along a makeshift runway along the California coast. Presented through video, the colorful, punchy collection fit perfectly into the bright, beachy setting. The designer struck a balance between bohemian and mod which resulted in a feminine mix of details. Sequins, appliques, and metallic trim embellished flowing caftan silhouettes and sharp a-lines. Most pieces were navy, black, and white, but pops of fiery orange and taffy pink provided a lively contrast. Accessories also added cheerful accents to the collection. Cat-eye sunglasses, boxy handbags, and statement earrings conveyed a modern ‘60s influence. Many of the looks would be ideal for a beachside summer soiree, minus the tall mule sandals, which would have one sinking 3 inches deep in the sand with every step. Rowley, a surfing enthusiast familiar with the soft terrain, took this into account, featuring pointed-toe, sling back flats and orange patterned sneakers as more practical footwear options.
Many of the looks seem geared towards a laid-back, sunny locale and not a bustling city, but the more structured pieces could definitely take to the streets. This ensemble would be fun for a date night or girls night out. The abundant sequins and sweet pink pants convey youth, but the clean cut of the jacket and pants make it more sophisticated. The neutralized pink shoes and handbag add a finishing touch without overwhelming this attention-grabbing outfit.
Overspending on a pulled-together yet flirty outfit for a night out is completely avoidable. One can create this look with pieces under $50. To start, find a sequined top or tank, such this short-sleeved option from H&M for $35. Add a coordinating sequined jacket with a straight cut. Choies.com sells this for just $24. For pants, choose a pair which is fitted and bubblegum pink. A fit and flare cut like this pair is $28 from gojane.com, but pick whatever silhouette is best for you. A cigarette pant or even a skinny jean could work. Accessorize with a small, structured purse like this light pink one from Topshop priced at $45. Finish the look with a matching pink pair of pointed toe flats. The ones above are $38 from asos.com.
Cynthia Rowley infused her lively, slightly zany spirit into her Spring 2016 collection, and it shows in the best possible way. One can look to Rowley’s designs for inspiration for any type of leisurely event, whether it is a beach trip or brunch. The sharp yet whimsical clothing is perfect for conveying personality.
