Stacey Bendet’s Spring/Summer 2016 RTW collection stays true to Alice + Olivia’s feminine and playful essence, while embracing a boho, earthy tone. Wanting to emphasize the “inner goddess” of every woman that directly correlates to the earth, Bendet made the desert the main inspiration for the collection. Sun-kissed neutrals, bright oranges, and a mix of zesty prints express the theme. The use of chiffons, suedes, and ruffle and fringe details brings focus to the softness of the desert, while strong prints and colorful embroidery mirror the bright flora found in the landscape. As in all Alice + Olivia collections, several black and white looks were featured in the show, although they didn’t quite mix with the other warm tones. Silhouettes ranged from straight a-line shifts to blousy tops with cascading maxi skirts. While the evening wear lived up to the expectation of the brand, the variety of separates was especially strong.
This look captures the spirit of the collection, along with the femininity of Alice + Olivia. The suede top shows how the popular trend for fall can be translated for spring. An off-the-shoulder style adds a bit of flirtation, while still being modest. The floral print maxi does not overwhelm with print or look too heavy on the bottom because of the lightness of the chiffon material. Plus, the gold honeycomb waistband and fringe adds a fun accent. The lace-up heels, another trending style, dresses it up a bit. This look is universally flattering and can work for all body types because you can adjust the skirt to sit at the smallest part of your waist to accentuate your figure.
To recreate this look, start with a faux suede top. Good quality, but not too expensive options are currently available at many fast-fashion shops like Zara and Topshop. The one above is from the brand Artee Couture and is $38 from Nordstrom. Pair with a floral maxi like this $48 one from Abercrombie & Fitch, which comes in various colors. Add a black and gold geometric belt for an accent to reflect the waistband of the Alice + Olivia skirt. Finish the look with a pair of neutral lace-up heels. This wrap-around styled pair is $31 from Lulus.com.
For makeup and hair, embrace the “Earth Goddess” theme by going for a fresh-faced glow and a boho ponytail. After applying foundation, skip the heavy contouring and just go for highlighting the tops of your cheekbones, bridge of your nose, and lightly on the forehead and chin. Keep the eyes bright as well by using a golden or bronze eyeshadow all over the lid, and to subtly line the bottom lash line. Accentuate the eyes by using pencil liner for a softer line, and finishing with lash-lengthening mascara. To do a boho ponytail, start by parting your hair in the middle. Gently sweep your hair back, off of your face, keeping the part visible, and tie hair into a low ponytail above the nape of your neck. These finishing touches polish the bohemian, earthy effect.
