High Fashion, College Wallet Rodarte S/S 2016

Sisters, collaborators and creators of Rodarte, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, craft  textural and whimsical collections. Their clothing exudes a gentle je ne sais quoi. It hints at the same playfulness and romanticism of a secret garden. Rich earth tones and light creams swathe their collections. Variations of layered chiffon, tulle, and lace communicates the lightness of the brand. The obvious prettiness of their creations avoids becoming redundant, however, because of the imagination and fearlessness of combining textiles in each show. Rodarte’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection continues telling the fairy tale their previous collections had begun.

This look radiates a sense of luxury, from the beaded dress to the shaggy faux fur coat. The shiny elements of the metallic gold shoes, embellished dress, and sequined scarf accentuate different focal points. On top of all of the hard reflective details, the lush fur coat adds softness. To add another layer of  texture, the black floral tights provides a contrast with the mostly white look.

To recreate a luxe look like this, choose one piece to invest in. A higher quality dress, coat, or pair of heels will be able to uphold the rest of the outfit. The options above show each piece at different price points, but all are still under $100.

For the dress, opt for something with a boho, carefree vibe. The long sleeve lace dress is a good option for transitioning seasons ($68 from NastyGal.com). Simple beading on a slip style dress adds dimension to an otherwise basic garment ($68 from Tobi.com). The shift style provides a more streamlined silhouette, but the metallic crocheted overlay keeps it from looking stiff ($35 from Forever21.com). Any of these styles would work layered with a fur vest like this $38 one from New Look, or a full bodied fur coat such as this $68 Misguided option from Asos.com. For the shoes, the Topshop gold platforms will provide a little extra height and comfort, and are only $48. Staying true to the original Rodarte ensemble, this $69 Betsey Johnson pair of heels is in a t-strap style and is coated in glitter.

The finishing touches of the outfit add an over-the-top amount of embellishment, which makes the look  quite striking. H&M offers an affordable option for lace tights at $12.95, or Express has a pair for $25. A thin scarf with metallic sequins tossed around the neck ties the look together. This gold sequined one is $9.16 from NewLook.com. If you are not a fan of loose scarves, try a mock scarf-necklace, like this $45 one from Topshop.com, which wraps around the neck and has tassels, but is made of metal and is more sleek.
Reminiscent of the Roaring 20’s, this ensemble would be ideal for a night out or a holiday party. It will be sure to make a statement at any event, and you will look like you stepped out of a modern fairy tale a la Rodarte.
