Leaves are changing color, temperatures are dropping and pumpkin-flavored anything can be found on every block; fall is officially in full swing. As the autumn season takes over New York City, the long awaited thrill of wearing trends seen on the runways of Fall 2014 fashion week is finally here. In order to properly transition into a new fashion season, a few staple trends are necessary additions to your wardrobe.
With 90-degree weather officially gone, a fall coat has resurfaced in your closet. Yet, to stay on trend, the one jacket that should be in your wardrobe is a poncho-cape. Oversized and warm was a huge trend on the runways. The poncho-cape is perfect for fall with its lightweight yet warm design that is easy to throw over a simple outfit, providing trendy flare. Zara carries multiple styles from traditional poncho to wool varieties for a small investment. Keeping warm with a poncho is an outfit staple that can be carried into early November weather.
With regards to accessories, a modern spin on the classic cowboy hat is the way to go. Another simple addition to a fall wardrobe, this trend was seen on looks from the Kenneth Cole fall 2014 collection and Tibi collection. Affordable versions of the trend in similar styles include a Forever 21 Wool Hat for less than $20.
Trends can be tricky to conquer, especially if they are a bit unpractical. Yet, one fall trend that is anything but tricky is sneakers. When Marc by Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Edun and DKNY revealed their high fashion collections with complementing sneakers instead of sky high heels, fashion-forward New Yorkers breathed sighs of relief and joy to have a comfortable alternative to look forward to. Adding sneakers to an outfit is no longer just a means of practicality, but a fashion statement as well. Look for bold sneakers with bright neon colors, spikes, sparkles, patterns, or even wedged sneakers if you can not bear to ditch the heel.
Last but not least, fur is a fall must, especially for 2014. The trend was seen across multiple collections, and some have even nicknamed it the year of fur. Fendi and Dolce & Gabanna both played around with the furry texture with oversized coats. To keep to a student budget, faux fur coats and vests are available at shops like H&M and TopShop.
Overall, this fall is about comfort and abnormal shapes and cuts. Take chances, and embrace comfortable style while it lasts!
