How to Wear Lipstick Like a Pro

The choice in lip color can either make or break an outfit; if lip gloss is seen as the high schooler’s makeup keepsake, it is safe to say that we are now old enough to experiment with lipsticks. Although it may seem intimidating, it is easy to rock the look with some helpful recommendations that will suit with all skin tones.

The Naturals

Enhance your natural lip color using lipsticks such as NARS Dolce Vita lipstick ($26) or NYX Antwerp lip crème ($6). Dolce Vita is a dusty rose color with a sheer formula, so it adds moisture and shine while bringing out the subtle pink in your lips. This color also acts as a good neutral base if you decide to wear a heavier eye look. NYX’s Antwerp is not a lipstick, but it certainly has characteristics of both lipstick and lip gloss, so it is a good transition item if you’re trying out lipstick for the first time. The shade is described as pink with yellow undertones, and it produces a matte finish.

The Reds

Donning a red lip is the epitome of sophistication and confidence. For a classic red, MAC’s Ruby Woo ($16)is a perfect choice. The retro matte formula highlights the pigmentation of the vivid blue-red on the lips and it looks fantastic on all skin tones. This type of signature red is wearable all year around, so it is worth investing on a good red lipstick. NARS’s Heat Wave ($26) is another shade of red, but is slightly different because there is a hint of orange underneath the vibrant red. The red/orange shade is appropriate for the spring and summer months, and acts as a bright pop of color to the lips, as well as to your entire ensemble.

The Corals and Oranges

If you feel daring and want to venture out of the usual reds and neutrals, try going for coral and orange shades. Designers such as Rag & Bone and DNKY presented orange lips on the runway for their Spring 2014 collections, making it a hot trend of the moment. MAC’s Vegas Volt ($16) is a crème coral shade with more orange than pink, and is a nice subtle coral for people who want to try out the oranges for the first time. Maybelline’s Color Sensational Vivids in Electric Orange ($6-7) is a neon orange shade suitable for warm summer days. Make sure to give this shade the full attention it deserves by keeping your outfit and face make up simple and clean.

For long-lasting wear throughout the day, you should wear a lip pencil underneath the lipstick. If you do not want to purchase a lip pencil for every shade of lipstick you have, try purchasing an item such as Lord & Berry’s invisible lip liner (£8.50) so that you can wear this underneath various shades. Remember to have fun and experiment with different colors so that you can find the shade that you love the most!
