After the two months of media hysteria that encompass award show season in Hollywood, there are only six days left until the 86th Academy Awards premiere this Sunday. With regards to fashion, this also cues the last major opportunity for actors and A-listers alike to show off their signature couture styles to the public until later this year. In the past, there has always been a specific crop of celebrities that the media looks to for best dressed looks, and this year is no different. In fact, this year’s Oscars may be one of the biggest for Hollywood fashion since many past best dressed contenders are nominated for awards in some of the biggest categories, including “Best Actress in a Leading Role” and “Best Picture”. Here are some of stars to look out for, but to see all of the looks be sure to watch the Oscars this Sunday, March 2, starting with a pre-show at 7pm EST on ABC. Also, check out E! and E! Online for live red carpet coverage before for show.
Since her role in the first installment of The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence has been a regular on Hollywood’s best dressed lists, and it would not be surprising for her to dominate the fashion blogs yet again. This season alone, Lawrence has sported several looks from Dior’s Haute Couture collection along with her new pixie haircut, and is scheduled to wear the brand again for the Oscars this weekend. But then again, we are talking about Jennifer Lawrence—the same woman who never takes anything too seriously, not even a trip on the 2013 Oscars stage or a dress malfunction at the 2013 SAG Awards—so perhaps she will reflect her casual attitude in her outfit choice. Either way, fans can prepare to be blown away.
Currently nominated for “Best Actress” for her work in American Hustle alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams has been making large strides in her wardrobe choices. Though she usually shines on the red carpet, this season in particular has been strong for her. Sticking to retro looks, Adams seems to have let her movie character take over her closet, wearing a cobalt blue Antonio Berardi dress to the SAG Awards and a red Valentino halter dress to the Golden Globes with retro up-dos to match. Look out for a similar trend to ring true for her Oscar ensemble.
Though at times her fashion choices can be a hit or a miss, actress Sandra Bullock has been progressively making a name for herself for award show fashion, and this year may prove to be one of her best. Nominated for her leading role in Gravity, which is also a contender for “Best Picture”, Bullock is likely to pull out all of the stops for this Sunday’s festivities as she did last year in a black beaded Elie Saab sheer gown.
Outside of the 2014 Oscar winners’ circle, there are still plenty of people to watch on the red carpet. Scandal’s leading lady Kerry Washington, who is set to present at the Oscars this weekend, will likely hold her spot as one of Hollywood’s fashion icons. Well into her pregnancy, she has especially captured public attention by showing off her baby bump in a custom-made Balenciaga gown at the Golden Globes and a blue shoulder-bearing Thakoon dress at the NAACP Awards, making her one to watch.
Long-time Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will also be present for the Oscars, after having been absent during the 2013 award season. As past award shows have proven, the couple’s wardrobe does not really matter; they will still probably (and deservingly) place high on the best dressed lists.
It is also worth mentioning Hollywood newcomer, Lupita Nyong’o, a Kenyan actress who has garnered media attention for her role in 12 Years a Slave, for which she is nominated for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role”, as well as her impeccable red carpet ensembles in the past few months. Seen wearing a striking red Ralph Lauren cape gown at the Golden Globes and a turquoise Gucci gown with floral collar embellishments at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, Nyong’o has proven herself a fashion force to be reckoned with. The overnight star has also landed a spot as the face of designer Miu Miu’s new ad campaign and the spring fashion cover of New York magazine, making her more than worthy of the title of “fashion icon”, despite this being her novice season.
